Volunteer Work That I Have Done In The Past Five Years:
Serve At State: This was a program held at my college on MLK day. Here we packed lunches for children in need, and we also created a "peace" mural out of fabric to sew together and display on campus at our college. This taught me many skills and some of which tied around the idea of community and how important it is to build a community.
SISU garden: The SISU garden project is a garden at the early intervention center and preschool SISU. My work was assisting building a sensory garden and it helped me gain perspective on how hard it is to manage creative efforts with a budget and trying to find funding. It also helped me to learn how rewarding working with a team of people I enjoy being around could be.
Martin elementary youth mentor project: Students of STEAM gave students at Martin elementary school a presentation about aspects of the STEAM program by using our projects from the STEAM program to present. This allowed me to help the younger generation by building an interest in STEAM based programs and technologies. This let me grow as a person as well since it taught me some patience in helping me teach the kids and explain concepts in an easy to understand and fun manner.
Park cleanup: I helped volunteer to clean Cherokee bluff park in my sophomore year of high school with my school's key club. This helped me to put in perspective how important it was to keep the parks clean. It also helped show me how hard work can make a difference in any situation by allowing me to make a difference in something close to me.
Kiwanis pancake breakfast: I volunteered with my key club to help out a Kiwanis charity breakfast in my freshman year. This allowed me to refine one thing I enjoy doing working in a kitchen. It also allowed me to learn about charity events and what it takes to run large events smoothly.
Pumpkin challenge: a group of other STEAM students and I competed against other groups of STEAM students to make a unique pumpkin carving with some lighting and mechanical aspect. The pumpkins were then auctioned to the teachers for charity money. This challenge allowed me to develop a unity between mechanical aspects of the project and creative aspects since it relied so heavily on both art and engineering design. It also allowed me to develop some teamwork skills that have benefitted me greatly in working in group settings.
